SPECIAL NOTE Achilleas Aperghis, born in 1909 in Garitsa, Corfu, was a greek sculptor. Initially attending drawing lessons at Corfu's Night School, he later enrolled in Athens' School of Fine Arts (1937-1939). By the late 1950s, he turned completely toward abstraction developing a distinctive style using welded metal bars to create animal-shaped compositions and ruinous vertical figures. His first solo exhibition was in 1955 at Ilissos Gallery, Athens yet his work was presented in a number of shows both in Greece and abroad. During his career he also took part in important exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale in 1956 and 1968, the Salon de Jeune Sculpture in Paris and the Europalia in Brussels.

Provenance: Private collection Thessaloniki, acquired in 2006 from Dimitris Pierides, founder of the Pierides Foundation.
