SPECIAL NOTE Alvar Aalto was a Finnish pioneering architect and designer who moved away from the 20th century classicism and gradually, along with other architects from Sweden, turned to modernism. The Viipuri Library (1927-1935) and the Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933) were two examples that highlight his architectural turn. Aalto's work prioritized qualities beyond immediate functionality, such as mood, atmosphere and intensity of life.
